MV SOLFJORD: A Transformation at Sea

At Guyana Port Inc., every vessel tells a unique story, and the MV SOLFJORD’s journey is no exception. Arriving on November 10th, 2024, under the care of Vivek Paul Shipping Inc., the vessel was in need of comprehensive attention to prepare for its next chapter at sea. Our expert project management team and technicians worked tirelessly to ensure that the SOLFJORD would not only be restored to its original state but enhanced for many more years of reliable service.

Revitalizing the Hull

The hull of the vessel is its first line of defense against the ocean’s harsh elements. On the MV SOLFJORD, the hull had begun to show signs of wear, from marine growth to corrosion, which, if left unaddressed, could negatively impact the vessel’s performance and fuel efficiency. Our first step was to carefully scrape away the years of marine growth that had accumulated, drastically reducing drag and allowing the vessel to glide more smoothly through the water.

Scraping was followed by a high-pressure wash performed to remove grime, dirt, and salt residue, leaving the surface pristine and ready for the next phase. With the hull cleaned and prepared, we proceeded with precision sandblasting, which thoroughly cleaned the steel, ensuring that no residual contaminants would interfere with the application of protective coatings.

Layers of high-quality primer was applied, which sealed the steel against future corrosion. To further safeguard the hull, we added a coat of anti-fouling paint designed to create a barrier against marine organisms, ensuring the vessel maintains its efficiency and integrity throughout future voyages.

Fine-Tuning Essential Systems

Beyond the hull, we focused on the essential systems and components that contribute to the MV SOLFJORD’s overall functionality. These crucial systems, which are vital to both performance and safety, included the sea chest, bow thruster grills, valves, and propellers.

The sea chest and bow thruster grills were removed, serviced, and reinstalled with meticulous care. These components play a vital role in ensuring optimal water flow for engine cooling and propulsion, so it was important to ensure they were functioning as efficiently as possible. Similarly, several critical valves, ranging from fire emergency systems to engine room fittings, underwent a comprehensive overhaul, bringing them back to like-new condition and restoring their full functionality.

The propellers, which are essential to the vessel’s propulsion system, also received detailed attention. We polished the blades to enhance their efficiency and minimize wear, contributing to the vessel’s overall operational performance.

Reinforcing for Longevity

Marine structures are subject to constant stress, and ensuring their long-term reliability is a top priority. For the MV SOLFJORD, this meant reinforcing key structural components. Our team fabricated and installed a new sea suction pipe, which is crucial for water intake and cooling, and repaired the bilge keel, which plays a stabilizing role in turbulent waters.

We also focused on the rope guard, which helps prevent entanglement with the propeller, and restored it with careful precision. Every weld, bolt, and adjustment was made with the utmost care, ensuring that the vessel was ready to endure the challenges of the sea for many years to come.

Perfecting the Finishing Touches

In our commitment to delivering exceptional quality, we made sure to address every last detail. To combat electrochemical corrosion, we replaced the anodes, which are critical in protecting the vessel’s metal components. We also repainted the waterline and draft marks, ensuring that they were clearly visible and in compliance with maritime standards. Additionally, the IMO number was refreshed, ensuring that the vessel’s identity was clearly displayed.

To verify the vessel’s structural integrity, we conducted ultrasonic thickness measurements (UTM), confirming that the steel was in optimal condition and that the MV SOLFJORD was ready to safely return to service.

Before and After: A Remarkable Transformation

The transformation of the MV SOLFJORD speaks volumes about the dedication, skill, and expertise of our team. From a vessel showing the wear and tear of its previous voyages to one that is now primed for new challenges, the rejuvenation of the SOLFJORD is a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality and precision.
